Baked Cinnamon Doughnuts

Want to try something a little different? How about giving these Baked Cinnamon Doughnuts a try! Traditional doughnuts are fried, and although that's sure to be a flavor powerhouse, fried foods are not always on everyone's menu. These baked alternatives lighten up the fat and hold better than a fried doughnut.

And with the correct equipment (doughnut baking pans) - they couldn't be easier. They were simple to mix up, just mix the wet and dry ingredients and then quickly combine them to form an easy to handle batter. They are put into the pan, baked for about 20 minutes and then pulled from the oven. Once they're cooked and cooled, a quick butter and sugar topping is all you need to finish them off. They were a hit with my family.

They were really easy to make - the only thing I did wrong was I filled the pan too much. They burst over the sides creating a "love handle" of sorts and left my doughnuts without a hole. My daughter to the rescue though, she took a paring knife and rectified the situation. It wasn't pretty, but it was fun. We laughed and ate them anyway.

In the end, they were sweet (I may cut back on the sugar topping next time) and very cakelike. They held well for a few days in a zipper bag and were quick to warm up for a few seconds in the microwave. Everyone had at least 2 and were well received. I may try a similar baked doughnut again but using blueberries, or orange cranberry. But starting with Baked Cinnamon Doughnuts is a great way to get your feet wet with doughnuts.
